Practical Experience

November 2013 - December 2013

WOODS HARDWICK ARCHITECTS

This work experience at an early age gave me an excellent opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from expert architects. I was able to understand the basic principles of the processes taken to design a project from initial sketches to the finished product.

January 2019 - February 2019

ST. PAUL’S ASSOCIATES

During the weeks I spent at St Paul’s Associates I was given briefs of two live projects and asked to complete RIBA stage 1 and 2. This was a valuable insight into operating in a practice and ensuring the RIBA standards were met.

April 2020

GLENN HOWELLS MASTER CLASS

I was given the opportunity to present and discuss a university project to a panel of experienced architects who provided practical and insightful feedback.

Undertaken at pHp Architects since September 2020:

The main projects I have been working on are detailed below.

Art Gallery Refurbishment:

I have taken a lead role on this project with assistance from a senior architect when needed. Taking this lead role means running site progress meetings, answering queries and leading an in-house team. Tasks carried out include:

  • Setting up the Revit file and modelling the existing and proposed building
  • Attending weekly site meetings and visits
  • Coordinating structural drawings for new openings
  • Detailing around the fire shutters to ensure the correct fire rating to the required areas of the building for public use
  • Specifying and ordering samples
  • Producing 3D visuals using Revit and Lumion
  • Producing plans and details
  • Resolving any issues on site from client/sub-contractors
  • Liaising with project manager, client, main contractor and sub-contractors

Logistics Warehouse:

My main tasks on this project were drawing based, whilst attending weekly clash detection meetings to ensure that coordination between out Revit model and sub-contractors' models were precise. There were strict BIM requirements that we had to meet for this project as the occupier wants to utilise BIM for future Facilities Management. Drawings produced include:

  • Site Plans (including traffic flow)
  • Fire Strategy Plans
  • GA Plans, sections and elevations
  • Ceiling, wall, and floor type plans
  • Acoustic Strategy Plans
  • Staircase Details
  • WC Layouts
  • Hazard Plans
  • Modelling in Revit and producing drawings were undertaken simultaneously during this period
  • Guard House Plans and Elevations
  • GA Elevations

Primary School Extension:

Whilst working on this project the building was in construction on site. This meant that the tasks I was carrying out were crucial to be accurate to avoid any delays. During this period, I was focusing on producing and finalising details for construction. Main tasks include:

  • Ensuring details meet the fire rating and acoustic regulations required for the school and met by manufacturer requirements
  • Regular site visits
  • Updates to drawings and details were continually being made to ensure site works ran smoothly
  • Room elevations and detailed package reviews, ensuring correct heights for WC basins, toilets, and hand dryers along with classroom furniture heights to comply with the client’s needs for the children at primary school age (Foundation, KS1 and KS2)
  • Produced a finishes board
  • Updates to the structural engineer’s steel model and the steelwork subcontractors' models
  • Beam and block drawings were resolved on to ensure that these lined up with the structural elements of the building
  • Preparing construction drawing package

Building Society Refurbishments:

This ongoing project consists of branch refurbishments for all locations throughout the UK. Drawing packages produced include:

  • GA Plans
  • GA Sections
  • Proposed Demolition Plans
  • Elevations
  • Floor finishes
  • Wall finishes
  • Ceiling Plans
  • Door and window schedules
  • Fire Strategy Plans
  • FF&E Plans
  • Secure Plans

Previous projects and works include:

  • Logistics facility fitout design
  • Masterplan development for Northampton and East Midlands Gateway
  • 700,000 sqft high and low bay distribution centre
  • Circa £2,000,000 warehouse scheme for large occupier
  • Secondary School science block extension
  • Housing Scheme development
  • House extensions
  • Planning applications

Other Industry Involvement

Outside of work I aim to continue my development and involvement within the industry. I am a member of the 'Women in Architecture' group and the 'Northampton Young Professionals' group in which I attend quarterly networking events. Aside from attending weeks CPD's I have also attended various courses including:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work
  • BIM Training Course (6 weeks in duration)
  • Logistics Projects Technical Masterclass
  • Produced and delivered a Lumion CPD in house
